There are many rewarding adult literacy volunteer opportunities to choose from. The following are basic descriptions of the most common volunteer opportunities and the training they require. Please note that we use the term "tutor" broadly, and these opportunities can involve assisting a classroom teacher, leading a class, working one-to-one with learners or directing small group activities.
GED Tutor - Help adult students prepare for the GED exam by tutoring them in one or more GED subject areas including math, science, social studies, writing or reading.

English (ESL) Tutor - Help students learn basic English speaking, reading and writing skills.

Substitute ESL or GED Teacher - Teach ESL or GED classes for a volunteer who is out-of-town or sick. In this crucial role you'll help programs continue providing quality instruction when planned or unplanned volunteer absenses occur.

Reading Tutor - Help native English or advanced ESL speakers improve reading and writing skills.

Math Tutor - Teach math skills, ranging from basic numeracy to alegbra and geometry to adult students.

College Prep Tutor - Help adults who have earned their high school diploma or GED brush up on reading, writing, or math skills and prepare for college.

Career Training Tutor - Help students gain employment and job search skills.

Citizenship Tutor- Help refugees and immigrants learn English, history and civis in order to pass the U.S. Naturalization Test.

Computer Tutor - Help adults gain the basic computer skills they need to survive and thrive in today's digital world and workplace.

English Conversation Tutor - Help English language learners practice speaking and improve conversation skills.

Administrative Support Assistant - Help literacy programs with administrative tasks to ensure that everything at the program is running smoothly.

Learner Intake or Assessment Assistant - Assist with the new student registration process, which can include administering assessments to new students.
