A Workshop for grades 4-9 reading tutors
Tutors in the know inspire students to grow
Once students enter 4th grade, they are no longer learning how to read. Now, students are expected to read in order to learn. To be successful in all aspects of school, adolescents must understand what they are reading. Middle Grades Matter focuses on those foundations of literacy that adolescents need in order to effectively understand texts and complete school assignments.
Middle Grades Matter is a 2.5-hour workshop designed for classroom and after-school program staff, volunteers and facilitators who are tutoring students in grades 4-9 on reading skills. The workshop provides a comprehensive overview of adolescent literacy instruction as well as hands–on strategies and approaches to use when working with students.
Overview- Explore the foundations of adolescent literacy and the core standards implemented in classrooms
Vocabulary - Learn about the importance of vocabulary and practice key techniques to help students learn new words
Comprehension - Examine strategies that encourage student comprehension of readings and understanding of text structure
Writing- Discuss the writing process and how to assist students in drafting, editing and revising written assignments
Motivation and Behavior- Explore how to manage difficult behavior and low motivation in tutoring sessions and get students back on track
Technology- Consider ways to incorporate technology and modern tools into your tutoring experience and keep students engaged
