Do you work with learners who have not yet learned to write or are learning the Roman alphabet for the first time? If you do, you know that the skill of printing letters can take a lot of time to develop. Luckily, our friends at Literacy Centre for Expertise have created a great resource for helping adults learn to print. It includes the following materials to help adults learn to write through direct instruction as well as both guided and independent practice:

  • A series of interactive slides to introduce each letter of the alphabet that includes
    • The name of the letter
    • Words that start with the letter
    • Shapes found in the letter (lines, circles, curves)
    • Practice activities for identifying, orienting and aligning the letter
    • Modeling and practice for writing the letter
  • A printable workbook with letter identification and writing activities
  • Printable flashcards of letters and related vocabulary
  • A digital “soundboard” with all the letters that plays the letter name when its button is pressed
  • A video for instructors to learn about the materials and how to use them

The resources could be used as a daily or twice-weekly routine or as an intervention for letters that learners struggle with. The activities can be done in an all-class setting with a SMARTBoard or through projecting the screen. Learners can also use the materials as a follow up to all-class work or independently using computers, phones or tablets. Check them out!
